What is Blue Monday and How to Combat the Blues

Lifestyle

Mondays are notorious for being the hardest day of the week. But there is something about a Monday in January that hits different. Not only have you got the whole week of work ahead, but you’ve got another whole year to think about too. So, it’s no surprise that there’s a thing called ‘Blue Monday’ this month.

What is Blue Monday?

Essentially, Blue Monday is the day that’s said to be the ‘bluest’ in terms of people’s mood. It always lands in January and is predicted to be the day that people struggle the most with their general mental health. It’s potentially a complete myth but is predicted from reasonable assumptions. Those assumptions include people struggling with feeling down thanks to contributing factors ranging from the furthest day from the weekend, the anticipation January brings, and seasonal depression.

Blue Monday is not factually definite. It’s just another day of the year, and you shouldn’t have any real response to it. But, if you are feeling unusually low, then it’s good to know that it’s somewhat a shared experience… and you will get through the other side!

When is Blue Monday in 2025?

This year, Blue Monday falls on 20th January. A Monday, of course, and around 3 weeks into the new year. But don’t worry, we’ll be bringing some ‘pick-me-up’ treats that week to help see you through the Monday blues.

Just remember, January may be a tricky time of year for you, but there are good times still to come. The days are getting longer, the temperatures will soon start rising, and Spring is just around the corner. Blue Monday might be relatable to you, but there is sunshine on the way!

You’re Not Alone

Perhaps Blue Monday is not a big deal to you, or perhaps it is. And although it’s a light-hearted nod to the struggles of January, it’s not that simple for everyone. If you are struggling with your mental health, you are not alone. You should not diminish your feelings because of a ‘made-up’ day of the year. Take your mental health as seriously as you would your physical health, because it is important to look after your wellbeing.
